Joseph M. Demarest, Jr. began his career as a Special Agent with the FBI in 1988. He was initially assigned to the Anchorage Division where he investigated White Collar Crime, Drugs, Violent Crimes and Foreign Counterintelligence cases. In 1990, Mr. Demarest was transferred to the New York Division where he was assigned to one of the Division’s two Colombian drug squads. In 1999, he was promoted to Supervisor of his drug squad and was also selected as the Division’s SWAT Team Leader. In 2000, Mr. Demarest was selected to serve as the Drug Branch’s Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC). During his one and one-half year assignment as Acting ASAC, he oversaw the activities of seven active drug squads comprised of over 150 Agent, task force and support personnel, and worked closely with HIDTA Director Chauncey Parker in the development of New York City’s first Regional Intelligence Center (RIC). The RIC consisted of five sections with over 550 representatives from Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies in the metropolitan area. After the tragic events of September 11th, Mr. Demarest was selected as the Shift Commander for the Penttbom Lead Pool. In that position, he led an ad hoc task force of over 400 Federal, State and local investigators from over 40 disparate agencies to address 5,500 Penttbom related leads. In 2002, Mr. Demarest served as the Agent-in-Charge of the GITMO Project.
In 2002, Mr. Demarest was promoted and served as the Unit Chief of the Usama Bin Laden Unit (UBLU) and CONUS 1 of the International Terrorism Operations Section 1 (ITOS 1) at FBI Headquarters. In 2003, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Section Chief of ITOS 1. He was subsequently selected and served for one year as the Acting Section Chief for ITOS 1 until his promotion in February, 2005 to ASAC of the Counterterrorism in New York City. After one year, Mr. Demarest was promoted to Acting Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the New York Division’s CTD, and in July, 2006, was appointed to this position. Mr. Demarest served in this position until February, 2008.
In December, 2008, Mr. Demarest was appointed by Director Mueller to the position of Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Office of the FBI.
Prior to his appointment as Assistant Director, Mr. Demarest worked as a Managing Director for the Americas with Goldman Sachs and Company in their Office of Global Security. Mr. Demarest has been the recipient of the Attorney General’s Award as well as the Director’s Award.
Prior to being employed with the FBI, Mr. Demarest was employed for five years as a Deputy Sheriff for the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Department.
